South African researchers validate traditional medicines for HIV treatment breakthroughs

South African researchers are making groundbreaking strides in validating African Traditional Medicines (ATMs) for HIV treatment. If successful, these efforts could revolutionise healthcare and boost economic growth by formalising Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS). However, regulatory challenges threaten to stall progress. Two indigenous medicines developed by traditional healers are currently undergoing rigorous scientific evaluation. One, known as Product Nkabinde, was developed by healer Magugu Nkabinde and his family. Research by Professor Nceba Gqaleni and his team at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has revealed anti-HIV and immune-boosting properties, leading to a patent filing.
