Civil War surgeon honoured The latest in the 2024 USA Women Quarters series features Dr Mary Edwards Walker (1832–1919) – a Civil War surgeon, and a women’s rights and dress-reform advocate. Walker relentlessly pursued her desire to serve as a surgeon during the Civil War, and in 1863, she became the first woman US Army surgeon as a ‘Contract Acting Assistant Surgeon (civilian)’. To date, Dr Walker is the only woman to be awarded the US Medal of Honor. She was presented this award on 11 November 1865 by President Andrew Johnson, with the citation including the words that she had ‘devoted herself with much patriotic zeal to the sick and wounded soldiers, both in the field and hospitals’.
