Seaton Down Roman Coin Hoard

Thomas Cadbury, Assistant Curator at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) in Exeter, highlights a remarkable Devon hoard, which is a key highlight in the museum.

When two metal-detectorists discovered a hoard of over 22,000 Roman coins in a field near Seaton, they unearthed a major piece of Devon’s archaeology. It sheds light on a particularly troubled period in Roman history and gives us clues as to life in Devon during this period. The coins date to the mid-4th century (AD 330s and 340s). It is likely that they were placed in a large sack before being buried in a hole. It also seems likely that whoever buried them intended to retrieve them at some point. Why they didn’t or weren’t able to is open to speculation.
