Introduction of a Cash Limit in Europe

With the EU implementing a cash limit from 2027, Sebastian Wieschowski considers the future of small cent coins in the light of changes proposed by the Estonian Central Bank.

They’ve actually gone and done it: the EU has decided to impose a cash limit. From 2027, cash payments over €10,000 will be banned across Europe, with individual countries retaining the right to introduce an even lower limit. Many Eurozone countries are already actively devising their own measures to reduce the use of cash. A small and inconspicuous Euro-country, Estonia, is currently demonstrating how this can be achieved. Estonia, one of the Baltic states, regained its independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union and reintroduced its own currency, the ‘kroon’. Estonians were fond of their currency and were reluctant to part with it in 2011 when they adopted the euro.
