The discovery of one small entire has led John Scott to uncover fascinating details about Sunday deliveries of the mail in the 19th century.

The sad loss of Dr Michael Mosley and the discovery of a diminutive entire, sadly lacking its contents, at Philex in Paris spawned both the title of this article and set a hare running on the theme of Sunday deliveries of the mail. On its face, the letter is unremarkable, being addressed to Oxford Terrace, Edgware Road, London, a street that no longer exists but which was in the country area of the twopenny post. Passing from the town to the country warranted a 3d charge, and so the handstruck ‘2’ has been deleted by a six-bar cancellation of the Westminster office and a ‘3’ struck alongside (Figure 1).
