A century ago, the first French Olympic Games stamp set with four designs was issued on 1 April 1924, promoting the event in Paris. International catalogues list the quartet as SG 401/4, Scott 198/201, Yvert/Maury 183/86 and Michel 169/72. Complete sets in mint, unhinged quality may be found at prices below €40, but nicely centred stamps are rather difficult to discover. The set ‘Jeux Olympiques 1924’ in MUH blocks of four has been offered at around €200. From the early stages of preparation, a variety of trial proofs in various colour combinations have been preserved, demonstrating how La Poste executed different versions of the bicoloured prints of frame and central design by Edmond Henri Becker and engraver G Daussy.
