POSTCARDS Cash for Europe After World War II, Europe was plagued by unemployment, strikes, unrest, lower food production and food shortages, just the sort of problems it was thought that the bogeyman of Communism might use to its advantage, writes Richard Stenlake. The America-funded European Recovery Plan, better known as the Marshall Plan after US Secretary of State George C Marshall, aimed to ward off this threat by injecting vast sums of money into Europe to aid productivity and economic recovery through modernisation and to reduce trade barriers within Europe. Contrary to popular belief, the Allied countries received more per capita than Axis and neutral countries. Britain, France and West Germany saw the most investment. The Soviet Union refused to take part and stopped Eastern Bloc countries from doing so…
