As we approach the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Maurice Buxton begins a series of articles on mail from the war with a look at events in the lead up to, and early part of, the conflict.

Wartime mail is frequently of great interest and widely collected. The circumstances of the war in question often show through clearly in letters sent at the time (and other contemporary postal items). Some were directly connected to the conduct of the war on an official basis. Others simply reflected what was happening in the text of private communications. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The number of people who can personally remember the events of the war is sadly now much reduced. But for many of us born in subsequent decades, ‘the war’ was the shared experience of our parents and grandparents, often referred to in conversations.
