Many friends of thematic philately devote themselves to the Olympic Games with its fascinating spectrum of stamps, miniature sheets, covers, cancellations and special features.
It is a great sporting challenge to develop one’s own path in this almost inexhaustible theme. After all, classic modern Olympic philately began with the first Olympic Games of modern times in Athens, which was accompanied by an extensive stamp series issued by the Greek postal service in 1896. Countless issues from all over the world have followed since then.
Some collectors concentrate on a favourite year or venue, others on certain disciplines, events, competitions, forms of issue, depictions, to name but a few possibilities. Almost every area of this internationally cultivated subject has rarities that may be of interest and value to other collectors.
