Ever since the Penny Black went on sale in Britain on 6 May 1840, people with the collecting bug have enjoyed adding stamps to their albums. Today, the number of different stamps runs into tens of thousands, and collectors simply have to specialise. Quite a few collectors have selected a most interesting specialty – number ones of the world. This simply means that only the first stamp issued by a country or territory is of interest. The British Penny Black is, of course, the main item in such a collection. Norway released its very first postage stamp on 1 January 1855.
