1d red block A stamps and covers of Great Britain auction was held at Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s on 25 February. A highlight from the sale was a marginal plate block of 16 of the 1841 1d red brown (QA–TD) from plate 10 (lot 109). This superb, unused, original-gum block, with full deckle edge selvedge, showed a major re-entry on TA and ‘P’ converted into ‘R’ by hand engraving along the R row. From the bottom, left-hand corner of the sheet, the very rare block, with full, marginal inscription and plate number ‘10’, went under the hammer for £13,000 from an estimate of £12,00–£15,000.
