Engraved Passion by Albrecht Dürer

An unissued Monaco stamp from 1971, reproducing an artwork by a Renaissance master, is remembered by Michael Burzan.

The withdrawn, first version of Monaco’s European stamp ‘Octopus of the Mediterranean’ from May 2024 without the EUROPA logo (see Stamp Collector, November 2024) reminded me of an earlier issue of the principality from 1971, when an error in the stamp design was noticed in good time before the issue date (Figure 1). It was intended to be Monaco’s contribution to the ‘Dürer Year’ of 1971, when the 500th birthday of the master painter and creator of important graphic works was celebrated with many issues around the world. A copperplate engraving entitled Christ before Pilate was chosen for the reproduction on Monaco’s 2f stamp.
