Chester’s Frozen Ears

THE WIND BLEW snow right into fifteen-year-old Chester Greenwood’s face. He swiped it away with his hand and trudged forward. He was almost to his favorite skating pond. He couldn’t turn back now. His older brother Orville and his younger sister Emilie followed, the wind hitting their backs. In 1873, it was another brutally cold winter in Farmington, Maine. Emilie pulled her wool cap low over her ears. Chester hated wool caps. The wool made his head itch something fierce. “Let’s hurry before the sun goes down,” Chester said. The three came upon the glistening frozen pond, and they quickly changed into their skates. Chester pushed off the edge gliding across the smooth glassy surface in a straight line. Emilie struggled to keep up, her legs wobbling back and forth…
