It was a cool early morning in Sicily, but it wasn’t just any morning. It was November 2, Il Giorno dei Morti, All Soul’s Day, the day to remember those who have died and the day when the youngest child in each family wakes up to a treat. If they prayed for the dead and left their shoes outside or beside their bed the night before, the souls would fill them with crunchy white cookies made of sugar and cloves.
