EKEBIL WAS TOO small to do anything big. She was too small to pull the purple taro roots from the deep mud. She was too small to weave a basket. She was too small to carry fishing nets. “Mother, I want to help our clan,” said Ekebil. “You can go to the beach and collect shellfish again,” said her mother, Mechas. Mechas was leader of their clan. At the beach, Ekebil saw a huge canoe arriving over the waves. The canoe was large enough to carry every person in the village. In the canoe was a giant.
