I’m pretending I’m a tree;I’d rather be a tree than me.It doesn’t have to bathe each dayOr have its mama throw awayThe sand crabs that I caught and putSafe in a place she’d never look—At least, I didn’t think she would—I hid them really, really goodBehind the sofa cushions whereShe’d never find them down in there.But Mom began to sniff and sniffAnd soon her lip began to lift,And when she found them, holy cow,She hit the ceiling, and somehowThat bunch of crabs—they hadn’t died—Well, they took off, and Mama triedTo sweep the crabs up with a broomAnd I was sent straight to my roomWhere I could look outside and seeThe tree that I would rather be.…
