Gen enjoys letting them know that “you don’t need to be sad when you have a chip or a break in a precious family treasure.” Not only can it be fixed, but it can be made more lovely with an ancient Japanese art called kintsugi. ALL GREECE WAS talking about the gifted young artist, Parrhasiusor so it seemed to another painter, Zeuxis. “Bah!” he snorted. “I could paint better than he could when I was a baby smearing mud on the wall.” Other Greeks felt differently. Magnet Painting

What You’ll Need: 2 large blocks or thick books newspaper thin cardboard paper tape small metal objects like washers, bolts, or paper clips strong magnet sewing thread tempera paints What to Do: 1. Place newspaper across the blocks and then the cardboard on top, leaving room underneath to move your hands. Tape paper to the cardboard. 2. Tie the metal objects together with different lengths of thread. 3. Dip the metal objects in paint and lay them on the paper. 4. With your hand under the cardboard, move the magnet around. BROKEN CRAYON GOO

What You’ll Need: broken crayons in a rainbow of colors 4 teaspoons Epsom salt 4 teaspoons warm water 4 ounces (½ cup) clear school glue spoon pencil sharpener plastic baggie bowl What to Do: 1. Put Epsom salt into the bowl. Add warm water. Stir until the water looks cloudy and you don’t see salt. 2. Add glue. Stir a lot. Keep stirring until a puffy glob is floating in the bowl. Stop stirring when the glob stops growing. 3. Pick up the slimy glob. Ask a grownup to throw out the liquid that is left in the bowl. Squeeze and pull the glob for five minutes or more.
