“OK, COME IN,” Doodlebug Pinkley said begrudgingly. Doodlebug’s best friend, Bog, stood beside him looking as glum as Doodlebug did.
“¡Gracias!” said Hazel, Bog’s little cousin, proudly using the Spanish word for thank you. She tromped into the Lodge, followed by Doodlebug’s sister, Dandelion, and another kid.
The Lodge, once an old toolshed, sat in Bog’s backyard, which was right next to the Pinkleys’ backyard. The Lodge Brothers usually never let anyone in. But today they were forced to have guests. Hazel was visiting with some family friends from a far-off place called Bolivia. Bog had agreed to keep an eye on Hazel and the friends’ son, Carlito. It was a gloomy rain-drenched day, and the Lodge was the only good escape from a house full of grownups.
