Maeja Keeps on Walking

MY NAME IS Maeja, and it is my job to watch my younger brother, Jungho, and sister, Kyunghee, as we walk home from school. The streets of Yeosu, in South Korea, are crowded with bicycles and cars rushing by. “I’m tired,” Kyunghee whines, “and hungry.” “Me too,” adds Jungho. So we stop to rest. “What do you think Umma is cooking?” I ask. “I want guksu,” Kyunghee says. “Noodles!” “Babekyu! Barbecue for me!” says Jungho. “Come on.” I stand up. “We need to keep walking.” At a busy corner, I notice a street banner flapping high above. It reads First Annual Walking Race to Jasan Park! Climb the Mountain to Win a Washing Machine! It might be fun to race. I walk to and from school with Jungho and Kyunghee…
