Two Coins for the Carousel

I JINGLE THE TWO shiny coins in my pocket. Enough for two rides. “We’ll go to the carousel later when I’m done shopping,” says Mama, smoothing her bag. We’re at the good farmers’ market. I open my mouth to complain but snap it shut. Later is better than never. Carousel sounds fill the air—music, spinning, and laughing. I see children looking for rings in the dispenser as they spin past. I bet they’re looking for what I’m looking for: the gold ring. During every ride, one gold ring appears in the dispenser. The lucky rider who grabs it gets a ticket for a free giant ice-cream sundae. Silver rings mean another ride. There are a lot of silver rings. I want the gold. “Do you think you’ll eat this many…
