WILD ABOUT HORSES from a young age, Lis Hartel grew up in Denmark in the 1920s. Though she sometimes competed in jumping, her real love was dressage, a demanding sport where horses seem to dance across the ring, guided by almost invisible commands from their riders. Lis was only 22 when she became the Danish national champion in dressage. The following year, she won her second national championship. That’s when tragedy hit. In September of 1944, Lis was struck down with polio. In the 1940s, polio was one of the most dreaded diseases in the world. Polio can lead to paralysis, leaving people unable to move all or part of their bodies, sometimes permanently. Vaccines were developed in the 1950s, but that was too late for Lis. Her entire body…
