THE YEAR IS 1952. On the small island of Koshima in Japan, some scientists have put out a mound of sweet potatoes on the beach. They are here to study the snow monkeys, and they hope the potatoes will lure some out of hiding. Shortly, a swarm of furry snow monkeys tumbles out of the forest and onto the beach. They like the sweet potatoes. Imo is a young monkey in the troop. She’s past being a baby but not quite grown up yet. She still sits with her mother but gathers her own food. The monkeys sort through the sweet potatoes, sandy from being on the beach. They like the potatoes, but the sand feels nasty between their teeth. So they pick the sand grains off the potatoes before…
