Brown Bears vs. Polar Bears

One difference is fur color. Brown bears come in many shades: some are black like the Arctic night, some a muddy brown, and others a creamy blond. But all polar bears are white—or so it appears. Their thick fur is actually clear. It looks white because the hairs reflect and scatter light, much like snow and ice do. This helps polar bears blend in with the Arctic setting, making them better hunters. Underneath their thick coats, their skin is black. Black absorbs heat from the sun and helps keep polar bears warm in freezing temperatures. Another difference is the shape of their teeth. Brown bears are omnivores.
