FAITHFUL FINGERPRINTS

LOOK AT THE pads of your fingers. See those tiny lines? They are called ridges. Fingerprints are the marks these ridges leave behind when you touch something. Even if you cannot see these prints, they are there. Fingerprints are made because of the pores and sweat glands in each ridge. Before you were born, these ridges began to form. No two people have matching fingerprints, not even identical twins. That is why fingerprints can be used to identify people—or certain animals! Gorillas, chimpanzees, and koalas also have fingerprints. There are three main fingerprint patterns: arches, loops, and whorls. Arches look like rainbows or a series of hills.
