WHAT WOULD YOU pack for a long journey? Probably not as much as Mansa Musa. In 1324, Mansa Musa traveled across the Sahara to the holy city of Mecca. He brought as many as sixty thousand people, about one hundred camels, and enough goats and sheep to feed the group. He also packed a lot of gold. Some say each camel carried three hundred pounds of it. Who was Mansa Musa, and what kind of trip required all those people and so much stuff? Mansa Musa ruled the Mali Empire in West Africa in the early 1300s. He may be the richest person who has ever lived.
