A Rustler’s Birthday

“DAD, NOBODY WANTS to go to a cousins-only birthday party! Can’t we drive somewhere else?” Dandelion Pinkley complained as the big green Burpmobile neared her cousin Punky’s house. The bus’s nickname came from its tendency to throw off big belching backfires. It did that now, as if protesting, too. Dandelion’s brother Doodlebug moaned, “And he’s making us all recite bogus, made-up cowboy poems.” “Your poems are lovely, darlings!” Mr. Pinkley said. “Read them with pride!” He pulled the bus up to the curb in front of Punky’s. “Plus, these cowboy costumes we have to wear are awful!” Dandelion said. She tugged at her scratchy cowboy vest and adjusted her too-small cowboy hat. “Well, you kids know Punky’s always been crazy for anything cowboy,” their dad said. “So just have fun.…
