Harry Vetter — A NAUI Original

"As it was for every scuba diver then, it was all learning by doing." Harry Vetter (NAUI 004) was born in 1928 in Long Beach, California. He grew up in the Redondo Beach area, where his life was shaped by the Pacific Ocean coastline that surrounded him. He developed both a love and a respect for the ocean as he experienced it via bodysurfing, tidal pool exploring and freediving during his formative years. After graduating from Compton Community College in 1949, Vetter purchased his first scuba regulator, a Cousteau Aqua Lung, from Rene Bussoz at Rene’s Sporting Goods in Westwood, California, and taught himself to scuba dive using E.R. Cross’ hard hat diving manual. As it was for every scuba diver then, it was all learning by doing for Vetter.…
