John Banks (NAUI 50069) began diving 17 years ago as, in his words, a “typical diver.” He did a lot of traveling then, and he particularly enjoyed diving on the Pacific coast, where he loved the colder water. He was your average tourist diver on his trips, renting most of his gear at his destinations.
His first “realistic” encounter with what diving could be was an out-of-air experience with a free-flowing rented regulator. Banks may not have handled the situation by the book, but he did live to tell the tale, and that was the last time he used rental gear.
