Here at Sound+Image we are great fans of standmount speakers. It’s true that if you have a vast room that needs filling with sound, there’s no substitute for the sheer air-shifting abilities of floorstanders. But they do tend to dominate a room, and their sound is often harder to control. Many is the time when we’ve actually preferred the standmounters in a range for their tighter sound and their ability to weave beautiful soundstage images. They are also, inevitably, cheaper, even when you account for the price of a good pair of stands. And you’ll note that we have titled this group test as ‘standmount’ speakers, rather than the often-used ‘bookshelf’ speakers. If bookshelf space is all you have, then OK, better a good pair of small stereo speakers on bookshelves…
