It has been called ‘pure cinema’. Sometimes critics complain that some work or other ‘tells’ rather than ‘shows’. Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk shows, and apart from a card giving the briefest of historical background at the start, does nothing but show what’s going on. This movie verges on being silent. But that’s not right either. Indeed, there is very little dialogue, and often spaces of minutes at a time when not a word is uttered. But it is anything other than a silent movie, because the score speaks just about as much as the visuals, and far more than the dialogue. But back to the start.
