DLP: it’s all done with mirrors

Within DLP projectors lie one of the technological miracles of our time, the Digital Micromirror Device, or DMD. Thousands of tiny pivoting mirrors are manipulated into reflecting the image which illuminates the projection screen in ways so fiendishly complex that you can hardly imagine how the DMD evolved from intermediate stages into the final astounding piece of technology. The most recent development in DMDs is an ability to deliver 4K (Ultra High Definition) projection using multiple ‘hits’ from DMDs which have less than the full 4K’s worth of pixels. When reviewing recent projectors from brands including BenQ and Vivitar, we’ve been unable to establish the precise geometry of how these multiple ‘flashes’ from lower resolution DMDs have been combined to deliver UHD resolution.
