B&O respins a classic

Oooh, and ahhh — back in the day the sliding motorised lid of the Beosound 9000 CD player was a party piece. Its touch-sensitive buttons, its playback mechanism which glided between CDs to swiftly switch between discs and tracks in seconds: it was half hi-fi, half robot. Flanked by a pair of Bang & Olufsen's vertical speakers, it was a vision of the future, and a celebration of the compact disc's digital purity of reproduction. Hard now to believe it was only 1996.
