When first released it was considered just a hokey horror movie. But John Carpenter’s adaptation of a Stephen King bestseller about a lost teenager who stumbles upon an early and unusual example of a self-driving vehicle has more recently seen its reputation revving up.

Given that Christine is about obsessive love, it’s ironic that John Carpenter has never been that into his 1983 film. When it reached its 40th birthday last December, and we mention its acclaim as a classic or genre masterpiece, he scoffs down the phone: “Oh come on, stop, that’s ridiculous. I know there were rumblings about its anniversary. My question is, ‘Why?’” Carpenter is fond of his adaptation of Stephen King’s book about a deadly car named Christine, and he sure had a blast making it.
