As we enter 2022, looking back at 2021 reveals a year beset with anxiety and uncertainties. The saving grace was that 2021 was marginally better than 2020, which was a complete washout. Zhong Yi Optics has announced a new portrait lens, the Mitakon Speedmaster 90 mm f/1.5 in Leica M, Canon RF, Sony FE and Nikon Z-mount. The lens features a 9-bladed round iris design that enables the round-shape bokeh. The optical construction consists of 9 elements in 6 groups with two extra-low dispersion elements that reportedly, reduce colour fringing and chromatic aberrations. According to the company, chromatic aberrations (axial chromatic aberrations) are corrected with elements of special glass with anomalous partial dispersion. It comes with an approximate 27° angle of view. For Nikon Z and Sony users, there are a few automatic adapters in the market which can turn Leica M-mount manual lenses into autofocus. Venus Optics Unveils Macro Lens for Full-frame Cameras

Venus Optics has announced the release of Laowa 85 mm f/5.6 2x Ultra Macro APO, a compact and affordable mirrorless full-frame macro lens. The macro lens weighs approximately 259 g (Sony E) and measures Φ53 mm × 81 mm in size. A 46 mm filter thread is also provided for circular screw-in filters. This lens can focus from infinity to 2x magnification along with a minimum focussing distance of 16.3 cm. Irix Announces New Line of Variable ND Filters

Irix recently announced the release of the ultra-thin Irix Edge variable neutral density (VND) filters. The Irix Edge Vari-ND 2–5 filters come with coated aluminium and ‘high-quality’ glass with 24 coatings. The filters measure 4.7 mm in thickness in the Magnetic Mount System (MMS) version and 6.2 mm in the screw-in version. As the name suggests, these filters block 2 to 5 stops of light by twisting the front filter. The MMS version uses the magnets inside Irix’s cinema lenses to easily put the filter on and take it off as required. K|Lens, a Germany-based start-up, is designing and producing the K|Lens One light field imaging lens in co-operation with Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH in Germany. The new imaging lens works for both still images and videos, reportedly delivering additional data that no other lens can offer, namely, rich light field data in the form of depth maps, point clouds and nine separate viewpoints of each image/video. Nikon has announced that it has been selected for the highest rank “A List” by the CDP’s climate change questionnaire for the third consecutive year, from FY2019, recognising its efforts against climate change and its disclosure. In February 2021, Nikon revised its greenhouse gas reduction target of their emissions from 26% to 71.4% in FY2030, as compared to FY2013. This new target was certified in April 2021 by the SBT (Science Based Targets) initiative as conforming to the criteria for helping to keep the average global rise in temperature within 1.5ºC. Sony Develops Stacked CMOS Image Sensor Technology With 2-Layer Transistor Pixel

Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (“Sony”) reports that it has succeeded in developing a stacked CMOS image sensor technology with 2-Layer Transistor Pixel. Whereas conventional CMOS image sensors’ photodiodes and pixel transistors occupy the same substrate, Sony’s new technology separates photodiodes and pixel transistors on different substrate layers. According to Sony, this new architecture approximately doubles the saturation signal level relative to conventional image sensors, widens dynamic range and reduces noise, thereby substantially improving imaging properties. The new technology’s pixel structure will enable pixels to maintain or improve their existing properties at not only the current but also smaller pixel sizes. Tokina has released an updated version of its 400 mm f/8 mirror lens, adding a T-mount system that reportedly, improves performance and allows the lens to be used with eight different camera mounts. The Tokina 400 mm f/8 N II S mirror lens succeeds the 400 mm f/8 N S mirror lens that was released in July, 2020. Nikon Selected for CDP’s Climate Change Questionnaire

Nikon has announced that it has been selected for the highest rank “A List” by the CDP’s climate change questionnaire for the third consecutive year, from FY2019, recognising its efforts against climate change and its disclosure. In February 2021, Nikon revised its greenhouse gas reduction target of their emissions from 26% to 71.4% in FY2030, as compared to FY2013. This new target was certified in April 2021 by the SBT (Science Based Targets) initiative as conforming to the criteria for helping to keep the average global rise in temperature within 1.5ºC. Sony Develops Stacked CMOS Image Sensor Technology With 2-Layer Transistor Pixel

Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (“Sony”) reports that it has succeeded in developing a stacked CMOS image sensor technology with 2-Layer Transistor Pixel. Whereas conventional CMOS image sensors’ photodiodes and pixel transistors occupy the same substrate, Sony’s new technology separates photodiodes and pixel transistors on different substrate layers. According to Sony, this new architecture approximately doubles the saturation signal level relative to conventional image sensors, widens dynamic range and reduces noise, thereby substantially improving imaging properties. The new technology’s pixel structure will enable pixels to maintain or improve their existing properties at not only the current but also smaller pixel sizes. Ateleconverter (TC), also known as an ‘extender’ or a ‘multiplier’ is a device to extend the focal length of a lens. You simply attach the TC between the camera body and the lens and you are good to go. There is yet another advantage which most users are not fully aware of. When you attach a TC to any lens, the minimum focus distance does not change but the magnification does. This means that for the same minimum focussing distance, you get a much larger image; the image size will of course not match that of a true macro lens, but you get an image that is much larger than what you would have obtained without the TC.
