A simple smile and word of encouragement from someone we respect can go a very long way. Don’t underestimate your influence in someone else’s life. Sometimes a small yet sincere compliment can make a lasting impact.

For my senior year of high school, I had an English teacher, Miss Mary Atchison, whom I dearly loved. She was very strict and demanded the best from her students, which naturally resulted in all of us learning a great deal. The world of education could use more teachers like Mary Atchison. Toward the beginning of the school year, as we were all getting acquainted, Miss Atchison assigned a short poem to be memorized by the end of the week. The poem was “Flower In The Crannied Wall,” by Alfred Lord Tennyson. Our teacher wanted more than mere memory work—she wanted our hearts to align with the words; emphasizing, “I expect to hear and feel passion.” Friday rolled around and, one by one, she summoned us to the front of the class…
