Faith Country: Jackson Heights

Faith Country is the rebranding of a musical genre formerly known as Christian or Positive Country. It is a specific type of music that appeals to an audience who would be drawn to Country music, but may not expect a message of hope in Jesus Christ found in the lyrics. Who better to give an understanding of this style of music than some of its greatest pioneers, former members of DMB Band and MidSouth, now members of the band known as Jackson Heights.

Though interviewed separately, each member noted the 2012 reunion of DMB Band in Kinston, North Carolina, as the pivotal night which impacted their lives and future. McCray Dove, former member of The Dixie Melody Boys, tracked down members of DMB Band for the reunion. When they came together for the concert, each shared that it felt as if they had never been apart, even after almost 25 years. Named for the small rural community outside Kinston where they all lived at the time, Jackson Heights formed when that reunion—and ten limited dates following–became touring and doing what they loved once again. Kent Humphrey, lead singer, guitar player, and the only member of Jackson Heights who was a member of both DMB Band and MidSouth, talked about the beginning of the genre.…
