Gospel music has had a good number of marvelous lady singers: Hazel Slaughter, Lily Fern Weatherford, Mom Speer, Mary Jane Carter, Ann Downing, Vestal Goodman, Janet Paschal, Sue Dodge, along with a few others. Kim Collingsworth has caught my ear lately—that lady is a real singer. This month’s subject is a classy lady whose talent, in my view, has never been surpassed. Her name is Jeannie Johnson, known primarily for her years with the famous Speer Family, a group that shall ever remain the gold standard as far as family and mixed groups are concerned. During Jeannie’s 60-year career, she was always the perfect singer, and she’s not through yet. More on that later. Jeannie was born on June 16, 1941.
