THOUGHTS FROM THE FIELD Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) is a plant of dark corners and wet places, perfectly suited for planting in hedges. The attractive white hermaphrodite flowers are nearly over now, soon to be replaced by the green globes of fruit, which will in time ripen to a purply black. These are favoured as early autumn food for blackbirds, thrushes and later for migrating redwings and fieldfares. Dogwood timber is notably tough, supposedly used to make the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. The use of the word ‘dog’ in dogwood is thought to stem from the butchery trade. Smooth, straight twigs from the shrub were stripped and used to craft meat skewers, known as ‘dags’ or ‘dogs’. While young stems boast a deep red hue, the slightly dusty grey bark…
