No more deer closed season?

Following on from the recommendations put forward by the Deer Working Group, NatureScot has made three proposals in a stakeholder consultation. The most controversial is a proposal to remove the closed season for all male deer species, meaning, if implemented, stags and bucks in Scotland will be able to be shot year-round. The proposal is aimed at tackling Scotland’s growing deer population. In its response to the consultation, BASC opposed the move, citing the lack of tangible reasoning or evidence. James Sutcliffe, BASC deer officer, said: “Removing barriers to take more male deer may have some localised benefits, but on other occasions it may lead to the shooting of male deer throughout winter when the objective should be on managing female numbers. “The focus from NatureScot, landowners and shooting organisations must remain on culling…
