The SLA wrote that the game covers on the estate he manages were found to be some of “the most environmentally unfriendly places on the whole estate”, a statement that doesn’t surprise me. For far too long stands of maize have been the standard game cover, but surely it’s high time that maize was succeeded by crops that have a much broader appeal to wildlife and are also more appealing to the eye? Maize may have the advantage of standing upright to the end of the season, but there’s not much else going for…
