Setting it in post-war Japan makes it feel refreshingly different after a diet of Hollywood Godzillas and mechanical monster mayhem from various movies including Transformers and Pacific Rim. The biggest problem of recent Godzilla movies has been the dull, tedious humans. This one not only solves that problem but gives us a big, scary, destructive Godzilla that smashes up cities and battleships alike.
