CONQUERING THE ALAMEDA CREEK REGIONAL TRAIL

It was a hot and dusty afternoon in early June when I reached the top of a steep hill that marked the 40th mile I had biked that day. I was tired. My legs ached. My shoulders burned, and I had drops of sweat rolling down the back of my neck. It was the farthest I’d ever ridden, and we still had 10 more miles. Now I knew why they called this basic training for new Scouts. Nearly 20 of us first-year Scouts were winding our way along the Alameda Creek Regional Trail in Fremont, California.
