Edinburgh-based American novelist and poet Angie Spoto tells us about her gothic retelling of a Scottish folk tale

My new novel, The Bone Diver, is a gothic fantasy set in Scotland, and it follows a young woman named Kier, who is the daughter of seal killers, yet is unable to kill. She’s recruited by the mysterious Lady of Erskine Manor, a big, old mansion house sitting on a cliff edge overlooking the sea, and no one’s ever seen anyone come in or out of the manor. Kier is hired by Lady Erskine, it turns out, to dive for bones, and as she starts diving for bones on the estate, she starts to learn the secrets of all the strange people who live in Erskine Manor. The story is actually based on a fairy tale and is the retelling of a Scottish folk story about the legend of the selkies…
