Scotland’s most populous city certainly gives Edinburgh a run for its money in the culture stakes, says our local writer

Glasgow may be Scotland’s largest city, but the ‘Dear Green Place’ – a nickname that comes from a translation of its Gaelic name ‘Glaschu’ – has the intimacy of a village. Being flatter and more architecturally modern than Edinburgh, its main sights are less obvious, yet just as rewarding. Its origins date back to AD550 when St Mungo, Glasgow’s founder and patron saint, established a chapel and religious community in the valley of the River Clyde. In the 12th century, the current cathedral, dedicated to St Mungo, was built on the same site. During the Industrial Revolution, Glasgow’s iron, shipbuilding and textile industries resulted in fantastic wealth; evidence of this past grandeur is still visible in the Necropolis, with its 3,500 ornate tombs overlooking the cathedral, as well as some…
