On 6 May 2023, King Charles III was crowned atop the ancient Stone of Scone, otherwise known as the Stone of Destiny. It’s a relic of extreme importance in Scottish history, surrounded by fascinating myths and ancient traditions. But was it the real stone or a forgery? The stone is said to have been used in the coronations of every King of Scots from Kenneth MacAlpin in the mid-9th century to John Balliol in 1292. This lump of rock was considered as much a symbol of Scottish kingship as the crown itself. Tradition claims it was once Jacob’s Pillow from the Book of Genesis, which eventually made its way to Ireland. In the 5th century, the relic was taken to Scotland by the Gaelic King Fergus MÓr.
