Why is Mentoring important to the African-American community?

Mentorship was essential to my rites of passage in inner-city Philadelphia. My diverse mentors in the neighborhood had a profound impact, whether our interactions were informal chats on street corners or scheduled time in structured programs. Regardless of the situation, they each enriched my life with information to open my mind, insights to guide me, and inspiration to push me higher. From the teacher who coached the chess team to the old head on the corner and all those in between, those connections and caring voices--empowered me to look beyond hard streets toward the possible.
