THE “TOP, DROP ND ROLL” technique is widely accepted as the most effective way to minimize injury should one’s clothing catch on fire. Until recently, it never occurred to me how useful this technique would be in sailboat racing as well. The concept, as demonstrated here, is simple. The moment you realize your mark rounding, jibe or any other hot maneuver is about to go up in flames, stop trying to save it. Just drop the spinnaker, hit the deck, and let the good times roll.
