The southern Catboat Rally is, essentially, a civilized three-day adventure race that traverses the rivers and bays of Savannah, Georgia, and the South Carolina Lowcountry. It’s as simple as that. I’ve raced in hundreds of regattas, competing for cups and trophies over the years, but a rally? There’s a first time for everything.
This particular rally has been held since 2006, when a group of catboat enthusiasts envisioned a race—disguised as a cruise—from the Savannah YC to Beaufort, South Carolina, with an overnight stop at Hilton Head. Beaufort local Sam “Woody” Norwood was one of three creators of the Catboat Rally.
