Years ago, I went sailing with a friend aboard my family’s old Ensign the summer of our college graduation. Afterward, I distinctly remember his saying that while he’d had a great time he’d never in a million years get a sailboat of his own. “Too much work,” he said, and for a nonsailor bound for a busy life as a medical doctor, I suppose he was right. Take off the bulky cockpit cover, bend on the hank-on genoa, run the jib sheets, wrench the outboard to life, attach the halyard to the head of the main and then crank away while someone else tailed (no self-tailers on an Ensign back then, thank you very much!)—yeah, there was a lot to do before we got in any actual “sailing.” And of…
