I confess, there are times the thought of having to write the editor’s note for SAIL magazine’s annual New Boats & Gear issue fills me with dread. It is, after all, the same old thing all over again, year after year—right? Or is it? In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Central to the lightweight boat’s revolutionary performance is a pair of radically curved foils that project from the side of the hull and provide the necessary righting moment for the boat to stand up to a press of sail in a blow. When it comes to sailing, the first boat a newbie sets foot on can make all the difference in the world—which is why our editors were especially impressed with the new Zest training dinghy from RS Sailing when they selected it as one of their winners in SAIL’s 2018 Best Boat contest. We’d only been out on Miami’s Biscayne Bay aboard the Corsair 760R a few minutes when Corsair Marine marketing manager Shane Grover and I began bemoaning the fact neither of us had a GPS with which to determine our boatspeed. Hanse Yachts is currently updating its entire line, and one of the more recent models to debut as part of this effort is its midrange 388, an evolution of the popular 385. Although the new boat bears some obvious similarities to its predecessor, the improvements that have gone into its creation are more than just skin deep, and the result is a fine cruiser. French catamaran builder Lagoon created an unimaginable following when its launched its 380 nearly two decades ago. With over 800 of the boats built to date, it appealed both in size and price to couples with cruising dreams. No model launched since has been successful in pushing the queen off her pedestal. What’s in 3ft? That’s what I wondered as I stepped off Hanse’s new 388 (see elsewhere in this publication) and onto her ever-so-slightly larger sister, the new 418. Why bother to build two boats so closely related in size? Well, as I found out, the extra length makes quite a difference. After the debut of its 39-footer last year, the French company has made another significant entry into the U.S. midrange market with the Allures 45.9, an aluminum-hulled cruiser-voyager with some surprising qualities. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION The boat’s long waterline, plumb bow and flat sheerline follow the current design trends for performance cruisers, while the deckhouse has a clean, smooth line that melds into a wide, functional cockpit. That’s not to say that there are no more new ideas, but it does seem that many new tweaks and introductions are a bit incremental: let’s say evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The Leopard 50 is replacing the popular Leopard 48, but this constitutes an entirely new yacht, not just an upgrade of the older boat. The new 50 is 2ft longer than the 48, and the beam has been widened from 25ft to 26ft 5in. It is also available with a flybridge, and to minimize your suspense, it’s wonderful! Note that Leopard makes a point of calling it a “lounge” rather than a flybridge, and the version with said lounge is therefore called the Leopard 50L. There’s another version sans lounge called the 50P, for performance. For anyone wrestling with the tradeoffs between deep-draft sailing performance and shallow gunkholing cruising capability, the Southerly 540, with its lifting keel, may be the perfect solution. The Ed Duboisdesigned 54-footer is now part of the Discovery Yachts Group Line and is built in Southampton, England. We went aboard to see just how this big boat can be managed shorthanded and venture virtually anywhere in the world. A 9,000-mile cruise from Hong Kong to Cape Town isn’t a typical shakedown for a new boat, but it convinced Kraken Yachts founder Dick Beaumont that White Dragon, his new Kraken 66, was the boat he hoped it would be. Although sailboats come in all shapes and sizes, and serve a wide variety of purpose, they all still share a number of common features. They all, for example, have some kind of rudder (or rudders), keels and/or centerboards—underwater appendages as they’re commonly called—to keep them going in a straight line and also allow you to maneuver. Similarly, they also all have some kind of a steering system, a rig and, of course, one or more hulls. Boatbuilders and designers are constantly seeking out ways to improve their creations, and where one leads, others often follow. Here are a few example of features that are becoming commonplace on production boats. Are they design fads, or much-needed developments? You decide. HULL CHINES Look closely at a number of this year’s new boats, and you’ll notice something unusual about their stern quarters. On certain boats the curve of the rounded sections is interrupted by a hard angle, usually about a foot above the waterline and running forward for several feet before merging into the topsides. This is a chine, and it is one of the latest go-fast features to trickle down from top-level racing boat designs. The question new sailors often ask when they first experience a sailboat heeling is “What stops it from going all the way over?” to which the usual answer is something like: “That big lump of lead underneath us.” Stability is at the very root of sailboat design, and ballast is only one of the many factors that influence it. A boat’s stability is contingent on the relationship between two key factors. One is the center of gravity (CG), through which gravity exerts a downward force equal to the weight of the boat, rig and contents. The other is the center of buoyancy (CB), the midpoint of the underwater volume of the boat, whose upward thrust counteracts the effect of the CG (see figure above). Understanding the GZ Curve

With heel angle increasing from left to right, and the righting arm plotted vertically, the GZ curve will tell you several things about a boat’s stability. The angle of the upward leg of the curve indicates the initial stiffness of the boat. A shallow angle would indicate, for example, that the boat is initially tender; a steep angle points to a boat that has high initial stability. The top of the curve marks the maximum righting arm; after this point is passed the boat will become progressively less stable as GZ decreases. The intersection of the upper portion of the curve with the zero-GZ line marks the LPS. Below the line to the right of the LPS is the negative area, which indicates how stable the boat will be when inverted. Just as with…

COMPARING DESIGN RATIOS

When buying a boat, consider how its ratios compare with those of similar boats in its category. DISPLACEMENT-LENGTH RATIO The displacement-length ratio (D/L) is a nondimensional expression of how heavy a boat is in relation to its waterline length. A D/L is calculated by dividing a boat’s displacement in long tons (2,240lb) by one one-hundredth of the waterline length (in feet) cubed. Since the displacement in long tons can be expressed as a volume (in cubic feet of seawater), and since length-cubed is also volumetric, the D/L formula is nondimensional—the units of the numerator and the denominator are the same, feet cubed. The advantage of this is that the D/L can be used to compare the relative heaviness of boats no matter their size. A boat with a 25ft waterline and one with…

I recently had an interesting experience while out sailing aboard a 38ft catamaran. It was near the end of a beautiful afternoon, and we were entering a somewhat tricky anchorage guarded by a pair of reefs that had just been rendered invisible by the flat light resulting from a slight overcast. Being the curmudgeon that I am, I’d taken in our main, but had hung onto our genoa until the last possible moment before hand cranking in on one of the winches by the helm to furl it in. Fair enough.
